If you win a case, a judge or jury awards you money known as damages for your injuries. That amount can include compensation for medical bills, lost wages, pain, suffering, disfigurement, permanent injuries, and compensation for future lost wages. The money is intended to compensate you now for both your current loss and your future losses.

Taking Legal Action to Collect Money

However, an award of damages does not translate into immediate hard cash. You may have to take further legal steps to actually collect the money. If the defendant against whom you have won a judgment does not pay or has no insurance then it will be your burden to collect your judgment from the assets of the defendant. Quite often the defendant is judgment proof and your judgment will go uncollected.
